Kothamale Reservoir was the first project to begin under the Mahaweli Development Project which 2,270 ha of fertile land of the Kotmale Valley. Submerged by the waters of the reservoir are the ruins of many temples and human settlements. In fact, more than 14 tea estates, 57 villages and about 54 ancient temples, among others are said to have gone under water when the reservoir was built. While many of these places do not exist at present, even underwater, some of them still do. Among these, the ruins of the Kadadora Viharaya are spectacular, especially the sculptured statues of the Buddha and other deities. The name of this temple has been lost in time after the reservoir was built, but it is believed to be Pratibimbarama Viharaya of Kadadora.

This old temple was inundated due to the construction of kothmale reservoir under mahaweli project. But time to time in the dry season when the water level drops down, this temple is seen. Many people comes to this place when this happens. Not only this, but also many villages and temples were victims of this peoject. But to commemorate this a huge stupa (kothmale saya) was build and it's located near this area in the temple. It's visible from distance too.

Kadadora Vihara (Also known as Kadadora Sri Priyabimbaramaya Vihara) was a Buddhist temple, situated in Kadadora, Nuwara Eliya District, Sri Lanka. The temple was abandoned and ruined as the construction of Kotmale Dam in 1979 by Mahaweli Development programme. The ruins of Vihara still can be seen with diminishing of water level of Kotmale Reservoir but the sight is very rare.
