  Posh building, makes you feel your entering a different world altogether. As a travel expert I hoped that would rub off on their welcome. But it felt like entering into fort knoxs.

  Touted deferentially by a Sri Lankan friend, Aitken Spence Travels were indeed quick to respond to my last-minute request for a car, driver and itinerary for a 10-day tour of the country. Their representative altered the plan based on my feedback and all seemed in perfect order at the outset. A few days into the trip, however, once I'd paid Aitken Spence in full, the service quality declined markedly. Previously flexible, the company turned suddenly rigid in the application of its "policies". For example, when we discovered the two depressing "resorts" near Dambulla that the company had recommended and booked for us, we called their representative and requested to change the second hotel and modify our itinerary. Though our call was made 36 hours in advance of the hotel booking in question, the representative informed us that no refunds would be made. Furthermore, she said that the itinerary change we had in mind would cost us an additional $81, though a comparison of the old and new routes revealed an equal number of kilometers--a fact confirmed by their driver. Only later did we learn that the two Dambulla hotels Aitken Spence had recommended are owned and operated by Aitken Spence! And neither of them were fully booked at the time of our change request. The picture became suddenly clear: Aitken Spence Travels funnels unsuspecting customers to its own establishments in order to boost their understandably low occupancy rates. Clearly conscious of their dubious sleight of hand, Aitken Spence later agreed to reimburse us $110 for entrance fees to monuments we didn't visit, as we had abandoned the agent's initial itinerary. We welcomed the gesture, but here again the company performed badly. No, they said, they couldn't just wire the money to our bank account in France, as we had done to settle our invoice for the trip. Rather, the only way we could get our money was to come collect it in cash at the Aitken Spence office in downtown Colombo. This side trip, and the ensuing administrative fumbles it involved on the part of the Aitken Spence finance department, ended up costing us half a day. Aitken Spence Travels? Never again!
