Dambulla rock temple is one of the most beautiful temple in Sri Lanka it is build during precolonial period. Ancient temple was constructed under massive monolith and each temple separated by brick and mortar. each cave contain statues of Lord Buddha and his holiness disciples. and there are several statues of Kings and goads too. most interesting sight is their is tiny water fountain from monastery roof top and it provide drops of water through out the year even in heavy drought. surrounding nature also provide panoramic view to a tourist it is nice to see.

Go For the Paintings.. Dambulla Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the largest cave temples you can find in Sri Lanka. You should climb the mount (yes, it has many steps and the walk is really nice experience) which will take around 30 minutes. On the top of the mountain you can find 5 caves under a vast overhanging rock. The great people who built this temple had carved with a drip line to keep the interiors dry in rain season. There are 5 caves, 2 big caves and 3 small caves all are filled with nice Sinhalese paintings and Buddha statues. All together there are more than 50 Buddha statues including 14 meter statue. Also there are some statues of Sinhala gods and Kings. The most important thing of this temple to watch out for is its paintings. All 5 caves are filled with various paintings of Lord Buddha. You can find many traditional Sinhala texture patterns, flower patterns and hundreds of thousands of Buddha paintings. Every inch of the ceiling is covered with paintings and that is amazing. According to the historians, those paintings were completed during 3 eras of Sri Lankan history. The temple was built in 1st century by King Valagamba, then some statues and paintings done by King Nissanka Malla in 12th Century and finally some more paintings and modifications done by King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe in 16th Century. The paintings are still in really good colors and condition. Hence this is a religious place, you should worn a suitable garments when u visit it. This place is a huge tourist attraction and you can find many local and foreign tourists almost in everyday. If you need to pay more hours with the paintings, its really good to avoid weekends. The parking area is huge. The newly build Rangiri Dambulla Viharaya is also there and there is a huge gold plated statue of Lord Buddha (which they claimed the largest sitting statue of the world). There is a museum too, but you have to buy tickets to watch it. We didn't go there. If you need to find some coolest Sinhelese paintings, Dambulla Raja Maha Viharaya AKA The Golden Temple is the ideal place to visit.
