  In BC 103 King Valagamba sought temporary refuge in this cave while organizing his army. Furthermore, he kept his harem hidden here during this period hence the name “Sthreepura”. The pond which was said to be used by the king’s concubines for bathing could be seen within the cave. Folklore states that a tunnel system connects this cave with Yatahalena cave temple and Dedigama Koth Vehera.

  Some call this King Rawana's Istree Pura. Deep in the cave you get a pond. Must see place.

  According to folklore, when in hiding, King Valagamba had concealed 500 of his queens in this cave, which is how part of its name originated. Sthripura means a place full of women. Unlike any other cave in Sri Lanka, it has a magnificent natural stone arch at the entrance to the cave. About 250 years after the reign of king Valagamba, the cave was discovered by some Buddhist priest who converted it into a temple like in most cases in Sri Lanka. There are a network of tunnels inside the cave which was designed for the king to escape. To reach the temple you have to turn left at 'paththini devalaua' at Thunthota road.
