Definitely worth a 15-min detour from the steps up to the temple. The stupa itself is of course impressive. There are quite a few stone carvings still well preserved all around. It is also from here that you access some ancient caves (formed by gaps under and between huge boulders) where Buddhist monks prayed, with interesting features like a rain drip edge. You can also get to a very cool plateau under a rock ledge with excellent views of the white stupa of the main temple, and the lowlands. You can either do a five second scramble or walk around a more safe way if you feel nervous. It's a very calm place. On the way up you may be approached by a guy who'll basically offer a little unofficial tour (they are not allowed into the main temple which had its own guides) - if you don't want this, say no politely but firmly, early on - because otherwise you might end up accepting it "by default". The one we met was eager and pretty informative. They should be happy with up to a couple hundred rupees if you feel they provided a useful service. To continue, don't walk back the way you came up - take the other staircase and it'll take you to the temple entrance with fewer steps.
