Excellent explanation of how Gems were formed in Pre Cambrian period and mined in current location (over 20 ) districts in Sri Lanka. Sapphires are the most precious and abundant. No diamond mines have been discovered.

Can gain good knowledge about gems in Sri Lanka by visiting this place. Variety of gem stones both polished and unpolished available to see and get a feel of the nature of gems.. Many precious stones which are genuine are available if you want to buy at a very reasonable price too..

The most traumatic experience ever at this shop. We had the museum tour in dark with staff holding torches. We were trying to choose our sapphire in darkness. Initially they quoted us 250usd for one sahhire, later on they were happy with 155usd. What sort of pricing system is this. The staff claimed "if I knew you were going to bargain with the price, I would have said 400usd initially" We were about to pay, eftpos machine didn't work and we had to leave. Our driver had to drive an extra 40km during peak Sri Lanka traffic so we can go back in 2 days time. We called a day before, telling them to reserve the sapphire that we wanted and they agreed on the phone. When we went there, we were devastated that the stone they claimed was no longer available. The lady said they had to sell it if someone wants it. They presented us with another one that looks exactly the same but quoted double the price. Worst of all, we were humiliated by the boss and this big lady staff who were shouting at us in public. Claiming "you should have bought it the other day if you really wanted it, don't waste our time! Plus other nasty words by the owner" I would hate other customers to go through what we went through. My advice, only buy if you have knowledge in gems. Can be a huge scam. We travel around worldwide regularly, this is definitely the winner for POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.

The tour is amazing and you get to understand all about gems, we really enjoyed the tour but we didn't buy anything aftaid to be cheated, but after visiting other places such as Zam in Kandy and another one in Colombo, we regret we didn't buy from that place. However I don't know how we can buy and find out if it is legitimate gems.
