Down to earth, well-run, safe, welcoming, pretty, cultural meditation center in the rain forest hills an hour outside of Kandy in central Sri Lanka. There are two great meditation leaders, Upul and Thomas, I’ve had both. Upul is the main resident monk from Sri Lanka who has been there I believe for nearly 40 years and Thomas, from Germany has been at Nilambe for a good handful of years. What is there to say other than, you start meditating at 5am and finish around 9pm and are asked maintain silence during the days you attend. I feel this is a special place, and I’ve been to a few, so please go and enjoy!

For me, it has been one of my most memorable experiences to date. I spent about 21 days there in meditation. it was beautiful, rustic and has been on my mind every since I left. The place so lovely and though you do everything by candle light it makes for a rustic experience. Some foreigners as usual broke the silence rule, which is disappointing as you are supposed to be in silence the whole time. The accommodation is basic and the food absolutely incredible. I hope to return and retire there one day!

A nice place to do some serious meditation. Good climate. Temp drops down to around 17 Celsius during some nights. Has decent accommodation. More foreigners than locals to be seen at any given time. A one hour drive from Kandy town. Please call before you go.

Great place, in a wonderful area, up in the hill, located in an ex tea plantation that was donated by a generous man in the late 70s. I really enjoyed the schedule of the 5 day retreat, with a mix of sitting, walking, working and yoga meditation with the aim to practice open awerness. Upul, the teacher, is a wise man with a beautiful and strong silent presence. My only warning would be for complete beginners as there are not so many instructions given with regard to the practice. In other words it is better to have some experience/ practice of meditation and mindfulness before going to this retreat.
