On Easter Sunday of 5th of April 1942 catholic devotees had as were their custom, crowded in churches and were deeply engrossed in their prayers to God. The roar of airplanes reverberated from all directions. The thunderous boom of bombs was interspersed with the staccato burn of gunfire. It was then that it dawn upon everyone that the city was under Japanese air raid. The exited congregation hastily dispersed towards home in confused panic. They were simply fear driven wondering what had happened. Within the city of Colombo state of emergency prevailed, the city dwellers commenced an exodus towards villages. The buildings of city schools were commanded for military agencies. Under such a situation the need to launch an alternate program for the provision of education to students displaced from the city schools, arose the task of establishment of a school outside Colombo. For the students displaced from St. Benedicts College Kotahena, St. Josephs of Grandpass, and De La Sale of Mutwal, run by De La Salle Brothers, was entrusted to Rev. Brother Christansian, the Brother Provincial of that time. To Wattala the Japanese air raid was a blessing in disguise. It was the forceful agitation that persisted for a long time for Catholic English Schools that Rev. Brother Christansian’s attention began to focus on Wattala. The Rev. Brother, taking advantage of the situation, was able to purchase the palatial building and the land it was built on, belonging to Mr. T. M. James, for quite a concessionary price. The land was about 13 acres. On the 21st of April 1942 a group of Rev. Brothers came to residence under the leadership of extremely enthusiastic Czeschoslavian, Rev. Br. Vincent Joseph, for the invitation of the preliminary activities. Only a fortnight elapsed. The mostly desolated rooms of the bungalow, known as “St. Anthony’s”, yet teaming with bats, were transformed into classrooms. It was from the name of this residence that the college derived its name. A cadjan thatched hall too was put up. Black robed, white Brothers, rushed about quite busily. Somber senior teachers from the city rubbed shoulders with these hermits in their commitment to the preliminary involvements. Watching over and guiding over 3000 students is by no means an easy task. The administration at St. Anthony’s College take to this task enthusiastically, making sure that there are no loose ends in any sector. Maintaining a formal structure, the administrative work is clearly divided into sectors making all the work relating to all aspects of school more efficient and effective, whilst teaching students the importance of learning how to work within a structured institution.
