Period - 249-262 AD Builder — King Gotabhaya legend has it that this is one of the temples built by King Gotabhaya to avoid the ill effect of the sinful act committed by him which led to the donation of the head of King Sin Sangabo, which the former repeted subsequently. Later, during the Polonnaru period this temple flourished as a prosperous monastery and the copper coins, pieces of beads, bricks and earthenware pottery fragments etc which were found from this site bear evidence to the fact that temple had received royal patronage during the reigns of rulers such as Queen Law/alit Sri Sahassarnalla, Sri tvtallav-a Raja, Sri Codaganga Deve, Sri Dharmasoka, Sri Buvartekabahu etc. During the Dambadeni period this temple was renovated by King Pandita Parakramabahu and turned to a centre where palm-leaf writing was practised by bhikkus who were engaged in committing the scriptures to memmory and a two-storeyed building (potgut vihara) too was built by turn. Subsequently, during the Gampola period, King Kirti Sri Naren-drasinha caused the creation of a statue of Vishnu which was twelve riyanas in height on the upper floor and a bronze anklet was enshrined there. In 1753 AD a tempita vihara (temple on pillars) was constructed by King Kirti Sri Rajasinha near the sacred bo tree. This vihara on pilars became dilapidated during the 1960s and its main door-frame only remains at present. The present temple is the one on which reconstruction activities were started in 1870 AD and completed in 1900 AD
