Great hosts and accommodation! Couldn't have found a more perfect location! Nestled away from the beach, but still close enough to walk. Quiet, apart from the birds ;) clean, modern and beautiful! Nature at its best!

A beautiful gem in amongst the cinnamon tree's! The apartments are beautiful, and Hannah and Amila exceptional hosts. A short tuk tuk ride to the beach or the lagoon but in the peace and quiet of the jungle. Hikkaduwa beach is great, but noisy at night, the apartments are the perfect respite from the parties! And there's so much wildlife here, loved watching the birds and learning about all the different plants and tree's - I never knew that cinnamon sticks from the tree bark. It was great to have my own kitchen, and the Bbq and chill out areas in the communal gardens are great. Hannah and Amila are perfect hosts, so lovely and knowledgable about the area. Amila grew up here so he knows everything and everyone which is really handy, he's also an amazing surf instructor. Hannah and Amila are so kind and generous, we went on a great boat ride to the lagoon with them and some friends, great memories! We also had loads of amazing food cooked by Amila's family - if you get invited for dinner just say yes! Would highly recommend

We've just got back to the UK after staying in Banana Leaf Apartments in Hikkaduwa for 2 weeks (part of a 3 week trip to Sri Lanka in total). I can honestly say I can't believe how nice the owners Hannah and Amila are. It went beyond host and guests and we became friends within the first day or so. They will always be welcome with us anytime they visit the UK and when we go back to Sri Lanka, Banana Leaf will be the first place we book. The apartment we were in was perfect for us. The polished concrete is a beautiful touch (even the bath tub is concrete which I've never seen before and was amazing). The separate kitchen - outside the main apartment - is a really clever idea as it means we could cook without having to worry about any food being left in the actual apartment. That said we rarely needed to cook for ourselves for two reasons. The first is that Hikkaduwa has a huge number of restaurants, rotty shops and beach bars serving delicious food - huge portions for incredibly reasonable prices. The second reason was that we were cooked for by Amila and Hannah (and even Amila's mum - which was one of the best meals we had in Sri Lanka) on 4 or 5 occasions. I've never experienced this level of hospitality before and was blown away by their kindness and generosity. As we had our own apartment we felt we had complete privacy when we needed it but when we wanted to socialise we had amazing neighbours in the other apartments and of course our fabulous hosts/new friends Hannah and Amila. As the banana leaf apartments are off the main Galle road (which is very busy and would be noisy at night), we had the best of both worlds. While at the apartment we could enjoy the peace and tranquility of the surrounding countryside / jungle, but we were only a 20 minute walk (or 5 minute tuk tuk) away from the bars and restaurants when we needed them. There was so much beautiful wildlife, we felt completely spoilt. I saw peacocks, monkeys, geckos, monitors lizards, chipmunks and a huge variety of birds including kingfishers, egrets, kites and hawks. Also one of my favourite experiences was seeing the large fruit bats flying overhead as the sun went down in the evening - something I will really miss! Hannah even lent me a book on Sri Lankan birds when she heard me talking about the ones I had seen. It's these extra touches that makes them such fantastic hosts. As well as eating out and socialising in the evenings with our neighbours (other guests) and with our hosts we also went for 3 surfing lessons with Amila and we have truly been bitten by the surfing bug now. Amila is a great teacher and even showed us how it's done by surfing himself on the last lesson - although I'd like to think he learned a few moves from me ;) We met some brilliant people during our stay at Banana Leaf and we have some amazing memories. We were genuinely sad to leave but happy to know that we made new friends during our stay that we won't forget and will undoubtedly see again. We honestly can't recommend Banana Leaf Apartments enough. The apartments themselves are hard to beat (I can't think of a single flaw - it was perfect for us!) but it's Hannah and Amila's generosity, friendliness and willingness to go over and above what we expected that really made our stay an unforgettable experience. Thanks again for everything guys. See you again! Dara & Mish - xx -

Yes I am happy to write a review........avoid at all costs! I booked for 3 weeks while travelling through Sr Lanka and planned to spend Christmas. When we got there my wife didn't even want to get out of the taxi. The location is horrible, up a muddy track into an over grown jungle of mosquitoes and stagnant water. Oh, sorry that is the pond. We were in and out, didn't even unpack and then the lying pair who own the place refused to pay us the refund we had agreed so we are majorly out of pocket.I have never walked out of place before in my life until now. The place looks terrible, the deck chairs you see, you wouldn't sit on, the toilet leaked, the room was like a cell and the mosquito net, a must in this location, was full of holes. Neither would you want to prepare food in the lousy kitchen area with few amenities. Not to mention the walk to the beach down the track to the main road that our driver struggled to get up. There are much nicer places so do not be taken in with the pretty pictures. In this instance the camera did lie.
