  Kadugannawa rock tunnel is a significant landmark located in Kadugannawa on Colombo – Kandy main road. While constructing the Kandy road, British engineers decide to make this tunnel, instead of blasting whole rock.This tunnel was built in 1880. The road crossing Kaduganawa pass was designed be the British engineer W. F. Davidson, who died in 1829, before the Kadugannawa pass road was completed.

  One of the gateways to Kandy. This tunnel is a psychological victory for British as it was believed that without breaching this rock, the Kingdom of Kandy would never have been conquered. Currently this tunnel and its surroundings are undergoing renovations

  In British Colonial time, British built this tunnel to link Sri Lanka up-country capital Kandy to Sri Lanka commercial capital of Colombo. Very nice place to get down and see the beauty of the surrounding low-lying area.

  British built A1 highway to make passage to Kandy. This rock been carved and drilled to make way. In the present time the highway goes around it to give two way traffic. Idle place to stop to be relax and enjoy the beautiful views of the nature surrounds the area.
