  Kethumathi Women’s Hospital was established in 1980. The hospital building was donated by a rich couple. Kethumathi Hospital is a government funded and has 150 beds, 15 minor staff, 50 nurses and 30 doctors. Though this hospital is in Panadura it also caters to mothers outside Panadura like Kalutara, Wadduwa and Mollidoga….since there’s no other women’s hospital close by after Mahamodara Women’s Hospital in Galle and Castle Women’s Hospital in Colombo. In a month they have admission of 400 pregnant mothers and they also cater about 100 patients a day in the Outpatient department. Volunteers are expected to start work in the hospital from 8am till 11am and then from 2pm-3pm in the afternoon Monday till Friday. Volunteer work and responsibilty depends on the capacity of the volunteers. Nursing volunteers can work around with nurses. Pre-medical volunteers can shadow and observe doctors in different wards. Building good rapport and relationship with the hospital staff will certainly help you gain their trust. Facilities within Sri Lankan hospitals and clinics are often basic and treatments are sometimes not of the standard we would expect in the West. You should be prepared to see some shocking cases and try not to get emotionally involved with the patients. Your working hours will usually be decided on a weekly basis, however most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free.
