  According to locals, this tunnel was built during early 1900s by British after an accident near Meeyan Ella, which is located outside this tunnel. Before this tunnel was built, the railway track was on the mountain slope outside the tunnel 5A. There is a footpath covered with shrubs outside this tunnel where the old railway used to be. This tunnel was numbered 5A, because it was a newly added tunnel located between already existing tunnels No. 5 & 6.
