  Sri Gnanodaya Central college has been established in the present premises in 1965. As the required space was not sufficient, it was shifted to the present location. The Bilingual College was started in 1941, in Kanishta vidyalaya (Divulapitiya Junior school)The first principal of the school was Mr. W.J. Mendis. It become more popular and named as Divulapitiya Central college in 1986. It was named Sri Gnanodaya Central college in 1990 after Ven.Hissalle Gnanodaya thero, the chief incumbent and the head of the Saraswathie Pirivena, Balagalla.
