Our driver took us to this place after visiting the Japanese Peace Pagoda. It was an unplanned stop and we didn't have much idea of what it was. It is a Buddhist and Hindu place where many statues related to Buddhist and Hindu mythology are kept. There are statues of the sleeping Buddha in a cave, Maitreyi Buddha, Buddha when he went on a fast for 6 years, parents of Buddha among many others. It felt more like an open museum than a place of worship. However there is one small Buddhist shrine in the middle where a monk took us, blessed us and asked for a donation, but didn't really force us. There were a few small Hindu shrines also of different deities like Parvati, Murugan etc. A few monks tried to explain the significance of this place but we couldn't really grasp their English. Behind these shrines, as you walk around, guided by the monks you will see a small cave-like structure with the statues of Ravana and Hanuman on top of the cave. Inside this cave is a figure of Sita (in distress). The monk said that the cave is the last cave where Sita was kept after being abducted by Ravana. From what I understood, this is not the actual cave, but a representation of that cave. The actual significance of this place is that the mountain on which this is located (Rumassala) is believed to be a chunk of Sanjeevini mountain (the mountain with medicinal herbs transported by Hanuman to revive Lakshman). This is reinforced by the fact that a lot of medicinal herbs grow on this mountain. These herbs are endemic to this place and are not found anywhere else in Sri Lanka.

One of the few shrines to Hanuman the monkey god is here. Originally alone, the Buddhist temple was added in the last 10 years. Hanuman is said to have dropped healing herbs to form the peninsula

Nice temple/monastery. It's laid out like a maze in the woods with lots of different shrines and statues. Monks showing you the way around. If you carry a few coins, you can donate at different collection boxes. It's not mandatory, but appreciated.
