  This is another remarkable remains of the the pride Sri Lanka. After Yapahuwa era it's hardly found stone carvings and this is one of the greatest structure to show that even in Kandy era ( 14th century) that stone carving technology remained unchanged. The history of the temple goes back to the 14th century and this was built in 1344, under the patronage of King Bhuvanekabahu IV, who reigned from 1341 to 1351 A. D. In addition to the stone work, time and masonry was the other two key materials used here.

  this had been built by Ganeshvaracari, the Architect from South India on a request made by King Bhuvanekabahu IV. At the beginning it was known as Dharmakirti Vihara. Gadaladeni Vihara has been built on the South Indian Vijayanagara tradition and consists of the vihara, image house, chaitya, Bodhi Tree, two devalas and the monastic residence. A few ancient inscriptions are there as well.

  Built in 1344 by King Buwanekabahu IV, the Gadaladeniya Raja Maha Viharaya (Sinhala: ගඩලාදෙණිය රජමහා විහාරය), stands on the border of Udunuwara and Yatinuwara in the Kandy district. Located very close to the town of Pilimathalawa, the Gadaladeniya Temple (which had been named after the village in which it was built) was also called Gadaladeniya Gramaye Viharaya, Gadaladeniya Gramaye Saddharmakirthi Vihayara and Dharma Kirthi Viharaya. Saddharmakirthi was the name of the founding monk.
