  I think the museum offers a good enough understanding of the importance of the temple. A guide may not be necessary. The locals are also helpful enough to explain. Remember, however, to not disturb those who are praying or involved with the rituals. The lawns are green and good to catch some quiet time. The National Museum and Royal Palace are in the same complex. Also the entire complex is at a walkable distance from the Kandy Lake Club show. So one can enjoy the Kandy show at 5 pm then walk down to the museum, palace and temple around 6ish and then have dinner at the adjoining restaurants.

  It is a must in Sri Lanka. If you go and don't have a guide you can't fully understand what is all about. For us it was a new experiece.
