  Hurulu Eco Park (Hurulu Forest Reserve): This is the Hurulu Eco Park, part of the Hurulu Forest Reserve which comes under the purview of the Forest Department. Getting the information from a resident at Habarana, we found our way on the Habarana-Trincomalee Road. Coming from Habarana past the railway crossing after 100 metres you can see the Hurulu Eco Park board on your left, between the 116th and 117th km post. Hurulu Forest Reserve which is situated on the Habarana Trincomalee road, in between the 116th and 117thkm post to the left side, The distance from Habarana Junction to Hurulu Eco Park is around 6km. This Park was declared as a biosphere reserve in January 1977. This park is in a very important location and take part in as a especial habitat for Sri Lankan elephants during the time of both Kaudulla National Park and Minneriya National Park, are full of water during the rainy time and it is difficult to stay and not available enough food for elephants. This time most of elephants move to Hurulu Eco Park, and this time it become like paradise for the elephants as there are much of teak plants growing new leaves and buds, elephants love eating teak husk and newly growing fresh grass called “Mana” with the rainy season. So, can see many of elephants very easily there. This park is mostly famous with foreigners and locals as a safari destination. When jeeps cannot go both Minneriya National Park and Kaudulla National Park as those parks are flooded, they do safari in Hurulu Eco Park. And also have to notice that Minneriya National Park or Kaudulla National Park has no elephant to see even go for safari while those parks are flooded in the rainy season.. And other especially in this park, the people go safari in this park can experience real off-road driving through muddy and slippery wet roads and it is really need 4WD drive jeep to do a fun ride in the park. No need to drive for hours inside the park like Minneriya National Park or Kaudulla National Park, just enter the park and within 15min more or less you can see elephants in big herds inside or through the grass. There is a big rock mountain, where you can stop the jeep and climb up to have a nice view 360 degree. On the top of the rock, can see all the around elephants available and it is worth to climb to the top as it is 5 min walk. Hurulu forest reserve is location wise in a very important position made it as dynamic environment called “dry-zone dry evergreen forests”. There are many other protected areas situated around Hurulu Forest Reserve, such as. Ritigala strict nature reserve, Minneriya-Girithale and Mahaweli flood plains nature reserves, Wasgamuwa National Park and Kahalla-Pallekele sanctuary.

  You can watch natural habitat of elephants in this small park. No need to wait hours to see them. It will only take 2 hour to make a round on whole park. You can rent a 4WD from entrance of the park since the road conditions only suitable to 4WD off road vehicles within the park. Skilled drivers will take you on a adventures trip across the park. Definitely you will be able to see at least 10+ elephants There is a camping hut in middle of the park as well.

  You can see only elephants and some kind of birds. On weekends really busy with hundreds of jeeps.which annoying to travel.
