::This school was initiated in the VESAK full moon Poya day in 1881. Mudlier D.M .Samaraweera had an idea of opening a school for the children of this area. So he donated a piece of land and started this school in a little hut with a few children. Mudlier D.M .Samaraweera was a famous social worker and reputed community leader in that era. little by little the school became famous and increased the number of students. Later this school was registered as a vernacular aid school on 14th August 1890. The first principal was Mr Jhone de Silva. With the increasing number of students the space was insufficient. Mudlier D.M Samaraweera understood this and took steps to build a large hall in 1913 with his own money. . The second part of that building completed in 1924. Then it became a very big building of about 280ft X 50ft. Mudlier D.M Samaraweera was the manager of the school until from 1890. In 1943 Mudlier D.M.Samaraweera handed his responsibilities to his grand son , Major Montagu Jayawikrama and he was the manager until the school was taken over by the government in 1960. Then the name of the school was changed as Siddhartha College, Weligama. Then the student population was over 2000 like today. The science education (up to grade 10) and Advanced Level (Arts) classes were started in 1964.Advaced Level Commerce classes stated in 1977 and Advanced Level science classes started little later.
